This small story/poem is based on the song and videoclip for 'Give Me A Sign', a song by Breaking Benjamin, and a true story from 4 years ago.

"How could this happen?" He silently stammered
The dude must've been drunk, totally hammered
What other explanation could there be instead
For leaving an innocent person for dead?

He followed the doctors and closed the line
Begging for her to just give him a sign
Anything to soothe him or ease his mind
Anything to tell him he won't get left behind

The shouting sounded dull, echoing on
He could only hope for her to be strong
Emergency surgery should save her life
How he wished it had been him, and not his wife

A man with no shadow roams the halls
Wherever he goes, the darkness falls
A black silhouette, never really gone
Stalking the floors 'til his job is done

Just two levels above them he walked around
Entering a room without making a sound
A small boy was still awake, sitting on his bed
He had tubes in his wrists and his eyes were red

The man sat beside him and rubbed his back
He looked up at him, his tears were pitch black
The child wasn't scared, not terrified at all
He took the man's hand and joined him in the hall

A man with no shadow moves like a ghost
Welcomed by some, feared by most
Many would cower and try to defend
Others will greet him, just like a friend

She'd been moved to a room, unconscious and still
He sat by her bedside, worried and ill
The accident repeating itself through his head
The memory of impact filling him with dread

Why did it have to be this night?
A day of fun had turned to fright
They'd been riding bikes, just having fun
All of it ended by a drunk hit-and-run

He barely remembered what happened after
Pieces were missing from this awful disaster
But he didn't care, all he wanted now
Was to see her wake up, no matter how

A man with no shadow roams the halls
Wherever he goes, the darkness falls
A black silhouette, never really gone
Stalking the floors 'til his job is done

One floor lower he politely knocked
This room he entered was usually locked
The old woman awoke, but suddenly stalled
Her eyes were tired, her head was bald

Tears softly ran down her wrinkled face
Black streaks formed as she awaited his embrace
She looked at him with a slightly solemn smile
She'd suffered enough, it was time for her trial

A man with no shadow moves like a ghost
Welcomed by some, feared by most
Many would bargain, lie and pretend
Others will join him and welcome their end

Some doctors came in, he stepped to the side
He asked them questions but no-one replied
All of them acted like he wasn’t even there
He only wanted answers, this just wasn’t fair

Machines were buzzing along to the beat
Her heart hadn't yet accepted its defeat
Tears rolled down and stained his shirt
He angrily punched the wall, but it didn’t hurt

There was no time to worry or think that through
His thoughts wandered back to whatever he could do
He wouldn't leave her side, he'd always be with her
Things would go back to the way they were

A man with no shadow roams the halls
Wherever he goes, the darkness falls
A black silhouette, never really gone
Stalking the floors 'til his job is done

The door swung open and the figure stepped inside
He just needed one more person to guide
Nobody heard him, except for one
Who hadn’t yet realised that Death had won

He put his pale hand on the shoulder of the guy
He tried to make it clear, it was time to say goodbye
As dark tears fell the man shivered in his grip
But he let Death take him on his own final trip

A man with no shadow moves like a ghost
Welcomed by some, feared by most
Many would cry and beg for their life
Others will just wish the best for their wife

Death walked the halls with the man by his side
The bright lights flickered to slowly subside
As they vanished in the glow, without noises or cries
The woman was alone and opened her eyes

A man with no shadow roams the halls
Wherever he goes, the darkness falls
A black silhouette, almost fully gone
Leaving the floors as his job was done
I tried my hand at poetry, something I know I'm not very good at, but I wanted to give it a shot anyway.
It turned out pretty simple, with one of the most basic rhyme schemes in existence, good ol' AABB, though I'm still fairly happy with the result.

This was based off this song by Breaking Benjamin: www.youtube.com/watch?v=97S66x… and, as mentioned above the poem itself, based off something that happened during the summer four years ago.
I told part of this story somewhere before, and it feels weird to share something this heavy with you guys (so of course, you don't have to read it if you don't want to), but on the other hand it feels right. Because of the circumstances, and since there's been people who were even closer to the happenings, I haven't really had the chance to thoroughly talk about this with my family, so I guess I can tell you if you don't mind me doing so.

Leave out the small parts about the boy and the older man/woman, and you're left with that story about a young couple going through an accident where the girl ends up surviving, but her boyfriend (here I mentioned her as his wife, but they weren't married in the actual real story) died before he could be saved. It's scarily accurate to what happened to my cousin and her boyfriend 4 years ago, when they got hit by a car as they were on vacation, riding their bikes back to where they stayed. The difference is that my cousin spent a long time in a coma, and she didn't wake up until after her boyfriend had been buried for several days.
I know that this poem only shows the 'theatrical' version, and sadly enough that part was one of the easier ones in the whole process. The real pain comes after all that. The realisation, the guilt, the severe physical injuries and slow revalidation... I can only admire her unbelievable strength, and the strength of his family, and wish that something like that will never happen ever again.

Okay, now that I got this on here I should leave you guys to seek out something more pleasant to read, probably. I'm truly sorry for this depressing post, but I hope you didn't mind me sharing this with you. If it's any consolation, she's doing a lot better by now. We all had to miss her smile for a long time, but she found it again and we couldn't be more thankful for it. As for you, thank you for reading this until the end. I hope I didn't make you sad, and I hope you still kinda liked the poem I made.

I'm glad I could share this, thanks again for 'listening' to me talk about this Hug

It's a little scary to understand how close this is to a real story, but as a poem I'd say you did a really good job.
The Dark atmosphere and the repetition of "The man with now shadow" really gave it an eerie vibe that I quite liked, and the story it told was an interesting one to say the least.

Glad you're cousin is doing better though, that's always good to hear :3
